Max de Esteban will premiere a new series, Proposition One, at the Spicer House in Barcelona on Thursday, April 7. In this new series, De Esteban investigates the consequences of embracing new technologies and formats as artistic media, the political implications of technical and functional obsolescence, and the inherent conflicts of progress.
Proposition One chronicles technology products, which were originally used as artistic media, considered to now be obsolete. The large-scale, x-ray like images serve as forensic testimonies; the internal mechanisms of the products are clearly recognizable, even as they disappear, decomposing like organic bodies. At the same time, by obscuring any identifiable branding, the photographs come to represent generic symbols of decay and death. Products that had once been considered to be state-of-the-art, today evoke a sense of fragility, archaism and trauma. Max de Esteban's work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions throughout Europe. A former Fulbright Scholar, he holds graduate degrees from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and Stanford University, and a Ph.D. from the Universitat Ramon Llull. Born and raised in Barcelona, where he now resides, de Esteban has lived in London, Madrid, Palo Alto and New York.
